Three possible hands are given for South, but only one is consistent with their bids. Which one? What would the others hands have bid differently? Neither side is vulnerable.

Answer:
  • (b) is correct. Your 1NT showed a hand that failed the Rule of 14 – the points in the hand plus the number of cards in the long suit not getting to 14. In practice this “dustbin” 1NT response will contain 6-9 points (with nine the least likely point-count). You would respond 1NT with all three hands. However your 2 bid is not a suggestion (to play there) with five fair cards – it is almost a  command (to pass) with six cards – otherwise you’d go with /.
  • So Hand (a) should give a preference to 2
  • Hand (c) should pass 2
  • Only Hand (b) would bid 2 – the correct answer.
